MLS Fantasy 2018 - Parsing The Percentages, Round 17

What’s going on MLS Fantasy Managers?! Kevin here, and we’re back in action with our weekly Parsing the Percentages article for Week 17. Hopefully everyone is enjoying some World Cup action, but will have the time to tune in to some MLS matches and slot some of the following players into their lineups this weekend. This week, we will focus on Atlanta United and the Seattle Sounders… and some surprise picks at the end!

Atlanta FC (vs. Portland)

FiveThirtyEight: 59% chance to win

OddsShark: Atlanta Win -182

OddsPortal: Atlanta Win -180

Atlanta is one of the premier offensive powerhouses in all of MLS, plain and simple. When they are firing on all cylinders, they find the back of the net, efficiently, and often. Moreover, they, like most teams, enjoy playing at home… combine those three facts and managers can slot both Josef Martinez and Miguel Almiron with great confidence and without thinking twice. Yes they are pricey, but their upside is well worth the price point, especially if you can have both of them in the lineup to essentially double-dip with the Atlanta offense. Portland has been playing some better soccer of late, but on the back of a long trip to a hostile environment, against this offensive juggernaut (leading all of MLS to date with 33 total goals), we give the edge Atlanta attackers here.

Seattle Sounders (vs. Chicago)

FiveThirtyEight: 57% chance to win

OddsShark: Seattle Win -189

OddsPortal: Seattle Win -192

Nico Lodeiro is a no-brainer here: the Uruguayan will net you some quality bonus points at a bare minimum, with massive fantasy upside against a Chicago team that has seen their Vegas odds continue to drop throughout the week. Will Bruin could be a fun switcheroo pick as well if you pair him off against a NYCFC attacker on Sunday. Cristian Roldan is another switcheroo option as well if you're looking for a higher floor, although he may find himself further back in the formation with Lodeiro back in the lineup.

Real Salt Lake (vs. San Jose)

FiveThirtyEight: 57% chance to win

OddsShark: Seattle Win -156

OddsPortal: Seattle Win -154

You'll notice that we're changing it up this week by adding an unprecedented THIRD team to our picks! Our good friend and RSL supporter Jay from the MLSFI podcast (Twitter handle @JayMLSFI) will be giving us a hand this week as the oddsmakers in Vegas are rating them quite highly against San Jose on Saturday.

Albert Rusnak is back and should run roughshod over an Earthquakes defense that has been especially porous on the road this season - he's could even be a sneaky Captain pick for Jay's fantasy team this weekend. He also favors goalkeeper Nick Rimando and centerback Justen Glad, as San Jose will be missing a few players to World Cup duty and could get shut out this weekend.
