MLS Fantasy 2019 - Parsing The Percentages, Round 5

Hello all! Kevin from SoccerCaptains back at it here at the tail end of March for the Round 5 installment of our Parsing The Percentages series. The MLS weekend kicked off early on Friday night, but Vegas seems to favor a couple more teams that play later on in the weekend – so without further ado, here are our picks from SKC and LA Galaxy!

Sporting KC (vs. Montreal)

FiveThirtyEight: 56% chance to win vs Montreal

FanDuel: SKC Win -180

DraftKings: SKC Win -175

When we talk about Sporting KC, regarding the Fantasy MLS world, their most beneficial assets are their defense and their netminding. This is a very solid SKC team that has enjoyed a great start to the season, and is holding its opponents to only 3 goals against to date. Moreover, Montreal appear to be missing perennial MVP candidate Nacho Piatti this week, so we're going big on their defensive options this weekend. Goalkeeper Tim Melia (7.0m) and defenders Graham Zusi (7.6m) & Matt Besler (7.9m) are solid picks if you can afford them. If you have a tighter budget, Seth Sinovic (6.3m) is a fine choice, as well as Andreu Fontas (5.5m) if he earns the start. Midfielder Ilie Sanchez (9.1m) should also have a solid defensive BPS floor, although his price tag is pretty high for a player that far back in the formation.

If you're looking for offensive exposure from SKC this week, Johnny Russell (9.3m) is our favored option, and Kristian Nemeth (6.7m) isn't a bad switcheroo option for the bench. However, as we mentioned above, give how strongly we favor SKC's defensive prospects, we will likely limit ourselves to just one SKC attacker this weekend.

LA Galaxy (vs. Portland)

FiveThirtyEight: 51% chance to win vs Portland

FanDuel: LAG Win -115

DraftKings: LAG Win -114

We now turn to a matchup that will see the LA Galaxy take on a Portland team that has conceded the most goals in all of MLS to date (10 goals against). We'll start with the obvious pick first: now that it appears he is finally healthy, Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.2m) is a no-brainer up top. Granted, you'll want to keep an eye on lineups as there is a chance he may come on as a sub, but lock him in if he's in the Starting XI. Romain Alessandrini (10.1m) is another player that managers should consider if he's healthy. The 29-year-old Frenchman appears to be close to full fitness, and is one of the best midfield options across all home teams this weekend.

Defensively, David Bingham and Folf Feltscher are both priced at 5.2m and at a minimum are very solid candidates for a switcheroo given that the Galaxy play in the last match of the weekend. If your bench players put up big numbers, feel free to swap them out for 4.0m Galaxy or Portland players who don't feature in the 18!
